Pepper Endorses Axl

Dr Pepper announced that it will give a free can of its 23-flavored soda to everyone in America (Minus Slash and Buckethead) if Guns n’ Roses releases its long-gestating album “Chinese Democracy” sometime in 2008. CAN YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

“It took a little patience to perfect Dr Pepper’s special mix of 23 ingredients, which our fans have come to know and love,” said Jaxie Alt, director of marketing for Dr Pepper. “So we completely understand and empathize with Axl’s quest for perfection – for something more than the average album. We know once it’s released, people will refer to it as ‘Dr Pepper for the ears’ because it will be such a refreshing blend of rich, bold sounds – an instant classic.”

Given that the album has cost Geffen Records about $13 million, according to a “New York Times” report from 2005 that was denied but never proven wrong by the Roses camp, it sure would be nice if “Chinese Democracy” was really as great as the good Dr claims. More importantly, free soda.

Sadly, it doesn’t seem like GnR frontman Axl Rose will rise to this challenge. In a response posted on the band’s Web site, Rose claims to be honored by this random endorsement, but he doesn’t really say if it will make the damn record come out any sooner.

On the plus side, it would be kinda neat if this marked a new phase in Dr Pepper’s marketing, where they offer rewards to the public while baiting celebrity freak shows like Rose into ponying the heck up.
