Frida in Philly

Although I never saw that Selma Hayek movie, today I checked out Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. If you like surrealist, iconic, folksy art that is real, then you’ll really appreciate Kahlo’s art. Many original works are featured including “The Two Fridas,” numerous self-portraits and my personal favorite, “Moses”. Despite the fact the audio tour glosses over her alleged suicide, it does a great job of explaining the autobiographical nature of her work.

It interesting to see the tremendous output a tortured soul can produce. Throughout the tour, the narrator touches upon the amount of physical and emotional pain she endured. Although troubled internally, Kahlo channeled her energy into her work as an almost therapeutic release.

Running until May 18, the exhibit isn’t too pricey - under $20 with a student ID. And March 16 features a showing of the film Frida at 2:30 p.m.

And before you go, make sure you read Collegian’s preview of the display.
